Ghazal 102
Last night the wind brought news of the friend who has travelled;
I too will give my heart to the wind, come what may.
It has come to this, that I make my confidants
the flashing lightning every evening and the wind every dawn.
In the curl of your tress, my unguarded heart
never once said: remember the home I was used to.
Today I learned the worth of the advice of those who care for me;
Lord, may the soul of our counsellor be glad through you.
My heart turned to blood remembering you whenever in the meadow
the wind untied the fastening of the rosebud's robe.
My weak being had slipped from my hands;
at dawn the wind, with the scent of union with you, gave me back my life.
Hafez, your good nature will bring your desire to pass;
may lives be the ransom of people of good nature.
News of someone dear who is far away has reached you, or soon will, and it revives your heart. In your loneliness you have had no companion but the thought of them. You now understand the worth of the advice given by friends who care for you. Your good nature and clean heart will bring you to your wish in the end; be hopeful.
