Ghazal 103
The day of union with those who loved us, may it be remembered;
may those times be remembered, may they be remembered.
My palate has turned to poison from the bitterness of grief;
the cry of 'drink!' from the glad drinkers, may it be remembered.
Though the friends are free of any memory of me,
from me may they have a thousand remembrances.
I am caught in this bond and affliction;
the efforts of those who did right by me, may they be remembered.
Though there are always a hundred rivers in my eyes,
the Zayandeh river of the gardeners, may it be remembered.
After this the secret of Hafez stays untold;
alas, the keepers of secrets, may they be remembered.
You miss the good days that are gone and the friends who are no longer beside you. They may have forgotten you, but you have stayed loyal. In your present difficulty you have no one to confide in. Honour the memory of the past, but do not live in it: get in touch with one of your old friends.
