Ghazal 119
The heart that shows the unseen and holds Jamshid's cup,
what grief has it for a seal ring lost for a moment?
Do not give the treasury of the heart to the down and mole of beggars;
give it into the hand of a kingly one who will hold it in honour.
Not every tree can bear the cruelty of autumn;
I am the slave of the cypress's spirit, which holds its ground.
The season has come when, drunk with joy like the narcissus,
whoever has six silver coins lays them at the foot of the cup.
Do not, like the rose, begrudge gold now as the price of wine,
or Universal Reason will charge you with a hundred faults.
No one knows the secret of the unseen; tell no tales.
Which confidant of the heart has a way into that sanctuary?
My heart, which used to boast of detachment, now has a hundred dealings
with the wind of dawn over the scent of your hair.
Whom shall I ask for my heart's desire? For there is no beloved
who has both the grace of sight and the way of generosity.
What gain can be had from the pocket of Hafez's cloak,
when we sought the Eternal and he has an idol?
Your heart is clear-sighted; do not grieve over a small thing that has been lost. Do not hand your heart to just anyone: give it to someone who will value it. Stand firm in hardship, like the cypress. This is a time for open-handedness and gladness, so do not be tight-fisted. No one knows the secret of what is to come.
