Ghazal 120

I have an idol who keeps a canopy of hyacinth around the rose;
the spring of her cheek holds a line written in the blood of the Judas tree.

The dust of down has covered the sun of her face; Lord,
give her everlasting life, for she holds everlasting beauty.

When I became a lover I said: I have won the pearl of my desire.
I did not know what blood-scattering waves this sea holds.

One cannot escape your eye with one's life, for wherever I look
it has laid an ambush in a corner and holds an arrow in the bow.

When she shakes the snare of her tress free of the dust of lovers' hearts,
she tells the tale-bearing breeze to hold our secret close.

Scatter a draught on the dust and hear the state of the people of the heart,
for it holds many a tale of Jamshid and Kay Khosrow.

When the rose laughs in your face, do not fall into her snare, nightingale,
for there is no trusting the rose, though she holds the beauty of the world.

For God's sake, officer of the assembly, get me justice from her,
for she has drunk wine with another and holds herself aloof from me.

If you mean to tie me to your saddle strap, for God's sake take me quickly,
for there are dangers in delay and it holds loss for the seeker.

Do not deprive my eye of your heart-pleasing cypress stature;
seat it by this spring, for it holds a fine running stream.

Make me safe from the fear of separation, if you hope
that God will hold you safe from the eye of ill-wishers.

What excuse shall I make for my fortune? That town-disturbing rogue
killed Hafez with bitterness and holds sugar in her mouth.

You thought that by giving your heart you had gained your wish, but this road has many waves and dangers. Do not be quick to trust a smile and a pleasant manner. The person may be attending to someone else and treating you coolly; ask for what is due to you. Do not put things off, for delay does harm. Ask them to make your position clear.
