Ghazal 123
The minstrel of love has a wondrous tune and melody;
every air he strikes has a way that leads somewhere.
May the world never be empty of the lament of lovers,
for it has a sweet-sounding, joy-giving air.
Our dregs-drinking elder, though he has no gold or power,
has a God who gives freely and covers faults.
Hold my heart in honour, for this sugar-loving fly,
since it became your partisan, has the splendour of the phoenix.
It is not far from justice if he asks after his state,
the king who has a beggar for a neighbour.
I showed my tears of blood to the physicians; they said:
it is the pain of love, and it has a liver-burning remedy.
Do not learn tyranny from the glance, for in the creed of love
every act has a wage and every deed its return.
That idol, the Christian wine-worshipping child, said it well:
drink to the joy of the face of one who has purity.
O king, Hafez, who sits at your door, has recited the Opening,
and has the wish of a prayer from your tongue.
Love makes its own way, and every heartfelt appeal arrives somewhere. If your hands are empty, a generous God who covers faults is with you. Do not wrong anyone, for every act has its return. Keep company with people of clean heart. Ask the person of standing you are hoping in for their good word and their help; they will not disappoint you.
