Ghazal 129
If wine does not carry the heart's grief out of our mind,
the terror of events will carry our foundation away.
If reason does not drop anchor in drunkenness,
how will it carry the ship out of this whirlpool of calamity?
Alas that the sky played unseen against everyone,
and there was no one who carried a hand against this cheat.
The passage is through the darkness; where is a Khizr for the road?
May the fire of deprivation not carry off our water.
My weak heart draws me toward the meadow because
it may carry its life from death through the sickly breeze.
I am the physician of love; give wine, for this potion
brings ease and carries off wrong thinking.
Hafez burned, and no one told the friend of his state;
perhaps the breeze, for God's sake, will carry a message.
The pressure of events has frightened you, and you need to lighten your heart of its grief, or worry will wear you down. In this darkness you need an experienced guide; do not go on alone. Take refuge in nature and fresh air. Let the person who ought to know hear how you are; they are still unaware of it.
