Ghazal 137

She took my heart from me and hid her face from me;
for God's sake, with whom can such a game be played?

The night of my loneliness was set on taking my life;
her image showed me boundless kindnesses.

Why should I not be bloody-hearted like the tulip,
when her narcissus eye has been cold with us?

To whom shall I say that, with this soul-burning pain,
my physician has made an attempt on my helpless life?

She burned me like a candle in such a way that for me
the flask wept and the lute cried out.

Morning breeze, if you have a remedy, now is the time,
for the pain of longing has aimed at my life.

How can it be said among those who are kind
that our friend said this and did that?

An enemy would not do to the life of Hafez
what the arrow of that bow-browed one's eye has done.

Someone took your heart and then hid from you; this behaviour has left you confused and heartbroken. In your loneliness only the thought of them comforts you. Do not speak ill of them to others. If you have a way of getting a message to them, now is the time: do not delay.
