Ghazal 141
Did you see, O heart, what the grief of love did once again,
how the heart-stealer left, and what she did to a faithful friend?
Alas for that sorcerer's narcissus eye, what a game it started;
alas for that drunken one, what it did to sober people.
My tears took the colour of the sunset from the friend's unkindness;
see what my pitiless fortune did in this matter.
A flash of lightning shone at dawn from Layla's dwelling;
ah, what it did to the harvest of heart-wounded Majnun.
Cupbearer, give me a cup of wine, for it is not known
what the painter of the unseen did behind the veil of secrets.
The One who drew this enamelled circle full of pictures,
no one knew what he did in the turning of the compass.
The thought of love set the fire of grief in Hafez's heart and burned it;
see what an old friend did to a friend.
Once again you gave your heart and once again you were wounded; you expected loyalty from someone who had long been your friend. You have wept, and luck has not helped. No one knows the hidden reason behind what happened, so do not torment yourself with why and how. This fire will die down; give yourself time.
