Ghazal 146
At dawn the breeze was bringing a scent from the friend's tress;
it was setting our distracted heart to work again.
I pulled that pine-like shape up from the garden of my eye,
for every flower that bloomed from grief for her bore affliction as fruit.
I saw the light of the moon, bright from the roof of her palace,
turning its face to the wall in shame before that sun.
For fear that her love would plunder it, I let my bleeding heart go,
but it went on shedding blood and making its way in the same manner.
At the word of minstrel and cupbearer I went out at all hours,
for along that heavy road the messenger brought news with difficulty.
From end to end the beloved's giving was the way of kindness and favour,
whether she ordered the rosary or brought the unbeliever's belt.
God forgive the frown of her eyebrow: though it made me weak,
with a show of grace it also brought a message to the sick man's bedside.
Last night I marvelled at Hafez with cup and goblet,
but I did not forbid him, for he brought them in the manner of a Sufi.
A small sign from the one you love has stirred your heart again. You have tried to put this attachment away, but the heart goes its own way. News of them reaches you only with difficulty. Take whatever comes from them, bitter or sweet, as kindness. For all their coolness, they do ask after you.
