Ghazal 157
Whoever has a passion in his head for your fresh green down
will not set foot outside this circle as long as he lives.
When I rise like a tulip from the dust of the grave,
the brand of passion for you will be the black core of my heart.
Where are you, after all, O single pearl,
for whose sake people's eyes have all become seas?
From the root of every eyelash of mine water is running; come,
if you have a liking for the bank of a stream and the view.
Like the rose and the wine, come out from behind the veil for a moment and enter,
for another meeting may not come about.
May the long shadow of the curl of your tress be over my head,
for in that shade the frenzied heart finds rest.
Out of pride your eye does not incline to Hafez; yes,
to be aloof is the nature of the graceful narcissus.
Your attachment is permanent and will stay with you to the end. In their absence you have shed many tears and you are waiting. Ask them to come out from behind the veil for a moment and let a meeting take place, because chances do not last for ever. Their coolness comes from their nature, not from any fault in you; do not take it to heart.
