Ghazal 159
Not all the Sufi's coin is pure and unalloyed;
many a patched cloak deserves the fire.
Our Sufi, who used to get drunk on his dawn litany,
watch him at evening, when he is merry.
It would be good if the touchstone of experience were brought out,
so that everyone with alloy in him would be shamed.
If the cupbearer's down keeps drawing pictures on water like this,
many a face will be painted with tears of blood.
One raised in ease and comfort does not find the way to the friend;
to love is the way of rends who can bear affliction.
How long will you grieve over the base world? Drink wine.
It is a pity for a wise heart to be troubled.
The wine seller will take away the cloak and prayer mat of Hafez
if his wine comes from the hand of a moon-like cupbearer.
Not everyone who claims purity is pure: do not trust appearances, and let time and experience bring out the truth. The heart's road demands endurance and cannot be travelled in comfort. Do not grieve so much over worldly matters; a wise heart should not be left in turmoil.
