Ghazal 15
O holy beauty, who unties the cord of your veil?
O bird of paradise, who gives you seed and water?
Sleep has left my eyes in this liver-burning thought:
whose embrace has become your place of rest and sleep?
You do not ask after the dervish, and I fear you have
no thought of forgiveness and no care for reward.
That languid eye waylaid the hearts of lovers;
from this manner it is plain that your wine is strong.
The arrow of the glance you shot at my heart went astray;
let us see what your sound judgement plans next.
Every moan and cry I made, you did not hear;
it is clear, my beauty, that your court stands high.
The spring of water is far from this desert; take care
the demon of the waste does not trick you with a mirage.
By what rule will you travel the road of old age, O heart?
The days of your youth, at least, were spent in error.
O heart-brightening palace, dwelling place of friendship,
Lord, may the blight of time never lay you in ruin.
Hafez is not a slave who runs away from his master;
make peace and come back, for I am ruined by your reproach.
Thoughts of someone who has drawn away from you are costing you your sleep, and your appeals are not reaching them. Take care not to be fooled by a mirage on this road, and learn from past mistakes. Stay loyal and take the first step toward making peace; there is real hope of reconciliation.
