Ghazal 160

Solitude is sweet if the friend is my friend,
not if I burn while she is the candle of the assembly.

I would not take that seal ring of Solomon for anything
if from time to time the hand of Ahriman is on it.

Do not allow, O God, that in the sanctuary of union
the rival should be admitted and deprivation be my lot.

Tell the phoenix never to cast the shadow of honour
on a land where the parrot counts for less than the kite.

What need is there to explain longing? The burning of the heart's fire
can be known from the burning that is in the words.

The longing for your street does not leave my head; yes,
the stranger's bewildered heart stays with his homeland.

If Hafez had ten tongues like the lily,
before you his mouth would be sealed like the bud.

What you want is sweet only if it is truly yours, not if others share in it. It hurts you that someone unworthy is close while you are kept at a distance. Do not stay where merit goes unrecognised. There is no need for long explanations: the feeling in your heart shows in your words.
