Ghazal 166
The day of separation and the night of parting from the friend are over;
I cast this omen, the star passed, and the matter is over.
All that pride and luxury that autumn commanded
at last, at the footsteps of the spring wind, is over.
Thanks be to God that, by the fortune of the rose's tilted cap,
the arrogance of the winter wind and the pomp of the thorn are over.
Tell the morning of hope, which was secluded behind the veil of the unseen,
to come out, for the work of the dark night is over.
That distress of the long nights and the grief of the heart
have all, in the shade of the beloved's hair, come to an end.
I still cannot believe, given how time breaks its word,
that the tale of sorrow is over under the friend's good fortune.
Cupbearer, you were kind; may your cup be full of wine,
for through your care the trouble of the hangover is over.
Though no one brought Hafez into the reckoning,
thanks be that that boundless, countless affliction is over.
This is one of the best fals: the time of separation and hardship has ended. The dark night is past and the morning of hope has broken. The pride of your ill-wishers is broken and your long distress is over. You may hardly believe it yet, but the sorrow has ended. Be thankful and take hold of this happiness.
