Ghazal 167

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering;
it became the friend and companion of our startled heart.

My beauty, who never went to school or wrote a line,
with a glance became the teacher of a hundred professors.

At her scent the sick hearts of lovers, like the breeze,
became a sacrifice for her wild-rose cheek and narcissus eye.

The friend now seats me at the head of the tavern bench;
see the city's beggar, who has become master of the feast.

He formed a fancy of Khizr's water and Alexander's cup
and came to drink a draught with Sultan Abu'l-Favaris.

The house of joy of love will now be prosperous,
for the arch of my friend's eyebrow has become its architect.

Wipe the trace of wine from your lip, for God's sake,
for my mind is tempted to a thousand sins.

Your glance poured the lovers such a wine
that learning fell senseless and reason went numb.

My verse is as dear as gold to life; yes,
the favour of the fortunate became the alchemy of this copper.

Friends, turn your reins from the road to the tavern,
for Hafez went by that road and became a pauper.

This is a good fal: someone has come into your life who has calmed your uneasy heart and brightened your company. Your standing is rising, and the one who seemed of no account becomes head of the gathering. The favour of influential people gives value to your work. Only watch against excess, and look after your means, so that this happiness does not turn to loss.
