Ghazal 168
My soul melted so that the heart's business might be done, and it was not;
we burned in this raw desire, and it was not.
Coaxing, she said: one night I will be the lady of your feast.
I gladly became her least slave, and it was not.
She sent word: I will sit with the rends.
My name went out for being a rend and a drinker of dregs, and it was not.
It is right if the dove of the heart flutters in my breast,
for it saw the twist and coil of the snare on its road, and it was not freed.
In the longing to kiss that ruby lip in drunkenness,
what blood fell into my heart, as into the cup, and it was not.
Do not set foot in the street of love without a guide,
for I tried a hundred ways by myself, and it was not.
Alas that in search of the treasure book of my desire
I became the ruin of a whole world from grief, and it was not.
Alas and pain, that in seeking the treasure of presence
I went begging to the generous many times, and it was not.
Hafez devised a thousand stratagems by thought
in the hope that that beauty would be tamed, and she was not.
For all your effort and ingenuity, what you wanted did not come about, and the promises you were given led nowhere. This fal warns that you have gone on alone, without a guide. Give up devices and insistence: this matter will not move by your own planning. Ask someone experienced for help, or choose a different way.
