Ghazal 179

Good news has come that the days of grief will not remain;
that did not remain, and this too will not remain.

Though in the friend's eyes I have become dust,
the rival too will not remain so honoured.

Since the keeper of the curtain strikes everyone with the sword,
no one will remain a dweller in the sanctuary.

What room is there for thanks or complaint at the good and bad design,
when no mark will remain on the page of existence?

They say the song at Jamshid's feast was this:
bring the cup of wine, for Jamshid will not remain.

Count it a gain, O candle, to be joined with the moth,
for this dealing will not remain until dawn.

Rich man, win the heart of your dervish,
for the store of gold and the treasure of silver will not remain.

On this emerald vault they have written in gold:
nothing will remain but the goodness of the generous.

Do not give up hope of the beloved's kindness, Hafez,
for the mark of cruelty and the sign of tyranny will not remain.

Good news: the days of grief will not last. Just as earlier pleasures did not stay, this hardship too will pass. The position of those who wish you ill is not permanent either. The time for being together is short, so count it a gain. If you are able, win the heart of someone in need, for only goodness remains. Keep hoping for the beloved's kindness.
