Ghazal 17
My breast has burned with the heart's fire in grief for the beloved;
there was a fire in this house that burned the dwelling down.
My body melted because of distance from the heart-stealer;
my soul burned in the fire of love for the beloved's face.
See the burning of my heart: at the fire of my many tears
the candle's heart burned for me last night, in kindness, like a moth.
It is no wonder if a friend feels pity for me;
when I went out of myself, even a stranger's heart burned.
The water of the tavern carried off my cloak of piety;
the fire of the wine house burned the house of my reason.
Like a cup, my heart broke from the repentance I made;
like a tulip, my liver burned without wine and wine cellar.
Make less of the quarrel and come back, for the pupil of my eye
pulled the cloak off its head and burned it in thanksgiving.
Give up the tale, Hafez, and drink wine for a moment,
for we did not sleep all night and the candle burned away in tales.
The pain of separation has hit you hard and taken away your rest. A resolution you made against your own heart has only hurt you more. Cut the quarrel short and leave the way open for return and reconciliation. People around you understand and feel for you; let go of brooding over it.
