Ghazal 180
O you whose pistachio mouth has laughed at the tale of sugar,
I am longing; for God's sake, give one sweet laugh.
The tree of paradise dare not boast beside your stature;
I will pass over this story, for the talk would grow long.
If you do not want a river of blood to rise from your eyes,
do not tie your heart to the faithfulness of other people's children.
Whether you show yourself off or taunt us,
we are no believers in the self-admiring sheikh.
How will he learn of the distraction of my state,
the one whose heart was never caught in this lasso?
The market of longing is warm; where is that cypress-tall one,
that I may make my soul wild rue on the fire of her face?
Where our friend speaks with her sugared laugh,
who are you, pistachio? For God's sake, do not laugh at yourself.
Hafez, since you will not give up the glances of the Turks,
do you know where your place is? Khwarazm or Khojand.
You are longing for a single smile, a sign of someone's affection. Do not tie your heart to the loyalty of people who are still untested, or you will weep for it. Do not follow the self-satisfied. Only someone who has been caught in the same way can understand your state, so do not expect sympathy from others. This attachment may take you far from home.
