Ghazal 183
Last night at the hour of dawn they delivered me from grief,
and in that darkness of night they gave me the water of life.
They made me beside myself with the radiance of the light of the Essence;
they gave me wine from the cup of the showing of the Attributes.
What a blessed dawn it was, and what a fortunate night,
that Night of Power when they gave me this new grant.
After this, my face and the mirror that describes Beauty,
for there they gave me news of the showing of the Essence.
If I have gained my desire and a glad heart, what wonder?
I was deserving, and these were given me as alms.
On that day the hidden voice gave me the good news of this fortune,
that against that cruelty and harshness they gave me patience and firmness.
All this honey and sugar that pours from my words
is the reward for the patience they gave me for that sugar-cane branch.
It was the resolve of Hafez and the breath of those who rise at dawn
that delivered me from the bonds of the grief of the days.
This is one of the most auspicious fals in the Divan: you have been delivered from grief, and at the darkest hour you were given the water of life. What you are receiving is the reward for your patience under hardship, and you deserve it. Your prayers at dawn and your own resolve have undone the knot. Be glad and thankful.
