Ghazal 186

If the wine seller grants the need of the rends,
God will forgive the sin and drive away the plague.

Cupbearer, pour the wine in the cup of justice, so that the beggar
does not grow jealous and fill the world with calamity.

Truly, from these griefs the good news of safety will arrive
if a wayfarer keeps faith with the covenant of the Trust.

Whether pain comes before you or ease, O wise one,
do not ascribe it to another, for it is God who does these things.

In a workshop where reason and learning have no way,
why should a feeble understanding meddle?

Minstrel, tune the instrument, for no one died before his time,
and whoever does not sing this song is mistaken.

We who were slain by the pain of love and the affliction of the hangover,
either union with the friend or clear wine will cure.

Life has gone on wine, and Hafez has burned in love;
where is one with the breath of Jesus to bring us back to life?

Where people are treated fairly and generously, calamity is turned away. Keep faith with the trust that has been placed in you, and you will be relieved of these worries. Do not attribute hardship or ease to other people: both come from God. Do not pass judgement on what lies beyond your understanding. Put aside needless fear and keep your heart cheerful.
