Ghazal 187
O heart, burn, for your burning will accomplish things;
a midnight supplication will ward off a hundred calamities.
Bear the reproach of the fairy-faced friend as a lover does,
for a single glance will make amends for a hundred cruelties.
From the earthly kingdom to the angelic they lift the veil
for whoever serves the cup that shows the world.
The physician of love has the breath of the Messiah and is kind,
but when he sees no pain in you, whom is he to cure?
Cast your affair upon your God and keep your heart glad,
for if the claimant shows no mercy, God will.
I am weary of my sleeping fortune; may it be that a wakeful one
will say a prayer at the hour of the dawn's opening?
Hafez burned and caught no scent of the friend's tress;
perhaps the east wind will guide him to this fortune.
Your heartfelt longing and your prayers in the night will not go unanswered; they keep misfortune away. Bear patiently the reproaches and moods of the one you love: one kind look will make up for it all. Entrust the matter to God and keep your heart glad, even if others are unkind. Do not hide your pain, so that it can be treated.
