Ghazal 188
That meddler faults me for being a rend and a lover
who raises objections to the secrets of the knowledge of the unseen.
Look at the perfection of love's secret, not at the flaw of sin,
for whoever is without merit fixes his eye on the fault.
From the perfume of the houris of paradise a scent rises at the moment
when one makes the dust of our tavern the fragrance of her collar.
The glance of the cupbearer so waylays Islam
that perhaps only Suhayb would abstain from red wine.
The key to the treasure of happiness is acceptance by the people of heart;
may no one have doubt or suspicion on this point!
The shepherd of the Valley of Safety reaches his desire only when
for some years he serves Shuayb with his whole soul.
The tale of Hafez makes blood drip from the eye
when he recalls the time of youth and of old age.
Pay no attention to the fault-finding of people who know nothing of what is in your heart. And you, too, should look for merit and goodness in others, not for faults. The key to success is winning the regard of people of true heart. Reaching your goal takes years of sincere service; be patient and value your time.
