Ghazal 190

Your musk-black pen, on the day it remembers us,
will carry off the reward of setting two hundred slaves free.

The messenger from Salma's dwelling, may he be safe,
what would it matter if with one greeting he gladdened our heart?

Put it to the test: they will give you many a treasure of desire
if your kindness restores a ruin such as I am.

O Lord, put it into the heart of that sweet Khosrow
to pass in mercy by the head of Farhad.

For a king, better than a hundred years of devotion and abstinence
is the worth of one hour of life in which he does justice.

For now the coquetry of your charm has swept me from my foundation;
let us see what foundation it will wisely lay again.

Your pure essence has no need of our praise;
what can the tirewoman's thought do with God-given beauty?

We did not find the way to our goal in Shiraz;
happy the day when Hafez takes the road to Baghdad.

You are waiting for a message or a favour from someone who has the power to help; keep hoping, for kindness costs that person little and would change much for you. If you yourself are in a position of power, one hour of fairness is worth more than years of worship. If you cannot reach your goal where you are, it may be time to try a new road and a new place.
