Ghazal 198
I said: "When will your mouth and lip grant me my desire?"
He said: "Gladly; whatever you say, so they will do."
I said: "Your lip demands the tribute of Egypt."
He said: "In this bargain people lose very little."
I said: "Who has ever found the way to the point of your mouth?"
He said: "That is a tale told only to one who knows subtleties."
I said: "Do not worship idols; sit with the Eternal."
He said: "In the street of love they do both this and that."
I said: "The air of the tavern takes grief from the heart."
He said: "Happy are those who make one heart glad."
I said: "Wine and the cloak are not the rule of the faith."
He said: "This is practised in the creed of the Magian elder."
I said: "What use is the ruby of the sweet-lipped to an old man?"
He said: "With a sugared kiss they make him young."
I said: "When does the master go to the bridal chamber?"
He said: "At the hour when Jupiter and the Moon are in conjunction."
I said: "Prayer for his fortune is the litany of Hafez."
He said: "That prayer is said by the angels of the seven heavens."
The answer to your request is favourable, and what you want will be granted. The price you must pay is small compared with what you gain. Making other people's hearts glad is the best of deeds. For the important matter ahead of you, a fitting and fortunate moment is coming; do not rush, and wait for that hour.
