Ghazal 19

O breeze of dawn, where is the resting place of the friend?
Where is the dwelling of that lover-slaying, roguish moon?

The night is dark and the road to the Valley of Safety lies ahead;
where is the fire of Sinai, where the promised meeting?

Everyone who came into the world bears the mark of ruin;
ask in the tavern: where is the sober one?

The one fit for good news is the one who understands a hint;
there are many fine points, but where is one to trust with secrets?

Every hair on my head has a thousand dealings with you;
where are we, and where is the idle blamer?

Ask again of her tress, curl upon curl:
where is this grief-stricken, bewildered, captive heart?

Reason has gone mad; where is that musky chain?
The heart has withdrawn from us; where is the eyebrow of the heart's keeper?

Cupbearer, minstrel and wine are all ready, but
there is no pleasure without the friend; where is the friend?

Hafez, do not grieve at the autumn wind in the meadow of the world;
think reasonably: where is the rose without a thorn?

You are searching for someone or something, and the road ahead looks dark. Everything is in place except the one thing your heart wants. Pay attention to signs, and do not share your secret with just anyone. Do not be upset by setbacks: there is no rose without a thorn. Keep searching with hope and the way will become clear.
