Ghazal 209
The killing of this wounded one by your sword was not fated;
otherwise there was no shortcoming in your merciless heart.
When I, the madman, was letting go of your tress,
nothing was more fitting for me than the ring of a chain.
O Lord, what substance has this mirror of beauty,
that in it my sigh had no power to leave a mark?
In regret I lifted my head at the doors of the taverns,
since in the cloister there was not one elder who knew you.
Nothing more graceful than your stature grew in the meadow of grace;
nothing lovelier than your image was in the world of pictures.
Hoping that like the east wind I might reach your street again,
my whole gain last night was nothing but the lament before dawn.
I bore such things from you, O fire of separation, that like the candle
I had no remedy against you but my own extinction.
The torment of Hafez's sorrow without you was a verse
that needed no commentary for anyone.
Someone's coldness has hurt you deeply, and your pleading has had no effect on them. Letting go of what you were attached to was a mistake, and you regret it now. You will not find what you are looking for in the usual place: try somewhere else. Your sorrow is plain to everyone; try to find a new way before it wears you down further.
