Ghazal 212

Yesterday at dawn a cup or two had come my way,
and from the cupbearer's lip wine had fallen on my palate.

Out of drunkenness I wanted to return once more
to the beauty of the days of youth, but divorce had been pronounced.

In the stations of the Path, wherever we travelled,
well-being and the play of glances had fallen apart.

Cupbearer, pass the cup again and again, for on the journey of the Way
whoever did not come as a lover had fallen into hypocrisy.

O interpreter of dreams, give me good news, for last night the sun
had come to share my room in the sweet sleep of morning.

I was forming a plan to withdraw to a corner from that drunken eye;
my endurance and patience had given out before the curve of his eyebrow.

Had Shah Yahya not, out of generosity, come to the aid of the faith,
the affairs of kingdom and faith would have fallen out of order and harmony.

At the hour when Hafez was writing these scattered verses,
the bird of his thought had fallen into the snare of longing.

You have had a pleasant dream or seen a fortunate sign that promises light. Youth and days gone by do not return, so do not grieve over them, and make the most of the present. An easy life and a heart given to love do not go together: one must be chosen. The help of a great person will set your tangled affairs in order.
