Ghazal 216

That friend through whom our house was the dwelling of a fairy
was, from head to foot, like a fairy, free of fault.

The heart said: "I will settle in this city in the hope of him."
Poor thing, it did not know that its friend was a traveller.

It is not only from the secret of my heart that the veil has fallen;
as long as the sky has been, its way has been to tear veils.

The one my reason looked to was that moon who,
along with fine manners, had the way of those who truly see.

A star of ill nature carried him out of my grasp;
yes, what can I do? It was the fortune of the moon's turning.

Find an excuse for him, O heart, for you are a dervish, and he
in the kingdom of beauty had a head made for the crown.

The good hours were those that were spent with the friend;
all the rest was fruitlessness and unawareness.

Sweet were the water's edge, the rose, the green and the eglantine;
alas, that flowing treasure was only a passer-by.

Die of this jealousy, O nightingale, that the rose
was showing herself to the east wind at the hour of dawn.

Every treasure of happiness that God gave to Hafez
came from the blessing of the night prayer and the litany of dawn.

Someone dear has left your side or is about to leave, and your heart had counted on their staying. Forgive them: their road and their station were not the same as yours. What counts in life is the hours that were spent with a friend. Do not grieve over the past, and know that every happiness you have had was the fruit of prayer.
