Ghazal 218

در ازل هر کو به فیض دولت ارزانی بود
تا ابد جام مرادش همدم جانی بود

من همان ساعت که از می خواستم شد توبه کار
گفتم این شاخ ار دهد باری، پشیمانی بود

خود گرفتم کافکنم سجاده چون سوسن به دوش
همچو گل بر خرقه رنگ می مسلمانی بود؟

بی چراغ جام در خلوت نمی‌یارم نشست
زان که کنج اهل دل باید که نورانی بود

همت عالی طلب جام مرصع گو مباش
رند را آب عنب یاقوت رمانی بود

گرچه بی‌سامان نماید کار ما، سهلش مبین
کاندر این کشور گدایی، رشک سلطانی بود

نیک نامی خواهی ای دل با بدان صحبت مدار
خودپسندی جان من برهان نادانی بود

مجلس انس و بهار و بحث شعر اندر میان
نستدن جام می از جانان گران جانی بود

دی عزیزی گفت حافظ می‌خورد پنهان شراب
ای عزیز من! نه عیب آن به که پنهانی بود؟

Whoever in pre-eternity was found worthy of the bounty of fortune,
until eternity the cup of his desire will be the companion of his soul.

At the very hour when I wanted to repent of wine,
I said: "If this branch bears any fruit, it will be regret."

Suppose I threw the prayer mat over my shoulder like the lily:
would the colour of wine on the cloak, like the rose, be fitting for a Muslim?

Without the lamp of the cup I cannot sit in seclusion,
for the corner of the people of heart ought to be full of light.

Seek a lofty resolve, and never mind a jewelled cup;
to the rend the juice of the grape is pomegranate ruby.

Though our affairs look disordered, do not think them slight,
for in this country beggary is the envy of kingship.

If you want a good name, O heart, do not keep company with the bad;
self-approval, my dear, is the proof of ignorance.

A gathering of friends, spring, and talk of poetry in the air:
not to take the cup of wine from the beloved would be dullness of soul.

Yesterday a dear friend said: "Hafez drinks wine in secret."
O my dear, is it not better that a fault should be hidden?
