Ghazal 223

Never will your image leave the tablet of my heart and soul;
never will that swaying cypress leave my memory.

From my bewildered mind the thought of your mouth
will not depart, for all the sky's cruelty and the sorrow of the age.

In pre-eternity my heart tied a bond with the tip of your tress;
until eternity it will not pull away or go back on its pledge.

Whatever lies on my poor heart, apart from the burden of grief for you,
will leave my heart; that burden will not leave it.

Love for you has so taken its place in my heart and soul
that if my head goes, it will not go from heart and soul.

If my heart goes after the beautiful, it is to be excused;
it is in pain: what can it do but go in search of a cure?

Whoever wishes not to wander bewildered like Hafez
should not give his heart to the beautiful, nor go after them.

Your attachment is deep-rooted and lasting and will not be destroyed by hard times. Every other sorrow will pass except this one. This bond was tied by destiny, so do not blame yourself for it. But know that this road also brings bewilderment: if you cannot bear that, do not give your heart to every beauty.
