Ghazal 224

Happy the heart that does not always go where the eye leads,
that does not go unknowing to every door it is called to.

It would be better for me not to covet that sweet lip,
but how should the fly not go after sugar?

Do not wash the black of my grief-seen eye with tears,
for the image of your mole never leaves my sight.

Like the east wind, do not withhold your scent from me,
for without the tip of your tress I cannot go on.

O heart, do not be such a vagrant, at home everywhere,
for with that talent no work of yours will go forward.

Do not look with the eye of contempt on me in my drunkenness,
for the honour of the sacred Law is not lost by this much.

I, a beggar, long for one of cypress stature
around whose waist no hand goes but with silver and gold.

You who in nobility of character are a world apart,
may faithfulness to my covenant never leave your mind.

I see no one whose record is blacker than my own;
how should the smoke of my heart not rise to my head, as with the pen?

Do not lead me astray with the hoopoe's crown, for the white falcon
does not go like the sparrow-hawk after every paltry prey.

Bring wine and give it first into the hand of Hafez,
on condition that what is said does not leave the gathering.

Hold your heart back from chasing every tempting thing and every invitation: scattered effort gets you nowhere. What you long for is beyond your present means, so do not settle for every small thing either, and keep your dignity. Ask others for loyalty, and keep confidences yourself. Do not be too hard on your own mistakes.
