Ghazal 227

Though these words will not come easy to the preacher of the city:
as long as he practises hypocrisy and sham, he will not become a Muslim.

Learn the way of the rend and be generous, for it is no great merit
to be an animal that drinks no wine and does not become human.

A pure essence is needed to become fit to receive grace;
otherwise not every stone and clod turns into pearl and coral.

The Greatest Name does its work, O heart; be glad,
for by trickery and guile the demon does not become a Solomon.

I practise love, and I hope that this noble art
will not, like the other arts, be a cause of deprivation.

Last night he was saying: "Tomorrow I will grant your heart's desire."
O God, contrive some means that he does not change his mind.

I ask God for sweetness of temper in your nature,
so that our mind is never again distressed by you.

Until the mote has a lofty resolve, Hafez,
it does not go in search of the spring of the shining sun.

A promise has been made to you and there is hope it will be kept; pray that the other person does not change their mind. Honesty and generosity are better than outward piety, and trickery raises no one to a high station. Inner worth is needed for grace to reach you. Keep your aspiration high, so that you find the way to a great goal.
