Ghazal 230

If my heart is drawn to musk-scented wine, it is fitting,
for no scent of good comes from the asceticism of hypocrisy.

If all the people of the world forbid me to love,
I will do what the Lord commands.

Do not give up hope of the bounty of grace, for the Generous One
forgives sin and has mercy on lovers.

The heart stays in the circle of remembrance in the hope
that it may undo one ring of the tip of the friend's tress.

You who have beauty given by God and the bridal chamber of fortune,
what need have you of a tirewoman to adorn you?

The meadow is pleasant, the air delightful, the wine unmixed;
now nothing is wanting but a glad heart.

The bride of the world is a beauty, but take care,
for this secluded lady enters into marriage with no one.

Pleading, I said to him: "O moon-face, what would it be if
with one sweet from you a heart-sore man found rest?"

Laughing, he said: "Hafez, for God's sake, do not approve
that your kiss should soil the face of the moon."

Follow the way of your heart and do not fear other people's blame: there is no good in hypocrisy. Do not lose hope of God's forgiveness. Everything needed for happiness is there; all that is missing is a glad heart. But do not set your heart on the world, which stays with no one, and do not press your request: this time the answer, given playfully, is "no".
