Ghazal 234

When the sun of wine rises from the east of the cup,
a thousand tulips spring up in the garden of the cupbearer's cheek.

The breeze breaks the curls of the hyacinth over the head of the rose
when the scent of that lock of hair rises from the midst of the meadow.

The story of the night of separation is not the kind of story
of which a fraction could be told in a hundred treatises.

From the upturned table of the sky one cannot hope
that a single morsel will come without the vexation of a hundred sorrows.

By one's own effort one cannot find the way to the jewel one seeks;
it is a fancy that this could be achieved without being granted.

If, like the prophet Noah, you have patience in the grief of the flood,
calamity will turn away and the desire of a thousand years will be fulfilled.

When the breeze of your tress passes over the grave of Hafez,
a hundred thousand tulips will spring from the dust of his body.

No happiness comes without hardship, and effort alone is not enough: grace and destiny must help as well. If you stay patient in the face of difficulties, as Noah did, the trouble will pass and your long-held wish will be fulfilled. Keep your hope: after this hard period, a blossoming lies ahead.
