Ghazal 235

O happy the time when the friend comes back,
when the one who dispels grief comes back as the grief-stricken wish!

Before the troop of his image I led out the piebald horse of my eye,
in the hope that that royal rider would come back.

If my head does not fall into the curve of his polo stick,
what shall I say of my head, and what use would my head be to me?

I have sat like dust, never moving, at the head of his road,
in the longing that he may come back along this way.

The heart that came to an agreement with his two tresses,
do not suppose that rest will ever come back to that heart.

What tyranny the nightingales have endured from winter
in the hope that the new spring would come back again!

From the painter of destiny, Hafez, there is hope
that a beauty tall as the cypress will come back to my hand.

You are waiting for someone, or for happier days, to return, and you are right to wait: what has gone will come back. A heart bound to that person finds no rest, but winter does not last for ever. Stay where you are and be patient; destiny will settle the matter in your favour.
