Ghazal 236

If that bird of holiness comes back through my door,
the life that has passed will come back to me in my old age.

I have hope, with these tears like rain, that once more
the lightning of fortune that left my sight will come back.

The one the dust of whose feet was the crown of my head,
I ask of God that he may come back to me.

I will go after him; and to my dear friends,
if I myself do not come back, news of me will come back.

If I do not scatter it at the feet of the cherished friend,
of what other use will the jewel of my soul be to me?

I will beat the drum of new fortune from the roof of happiness
if I see my moon, newly gone on a journey, come back.

What holds him back is the clamour of the harp and the sweet sleep of morning;
otherwise, if he heard my sigh at dawn, he would come back.

I long for the face of the king who is like the moon, Hafez;
a blessing, that he may come back safely through my door.

Your heart is with a traveller or a loved one far away, and you long for their return. Keep hoping: the fortune that left will turn towards you again, and that reunion will make you young and glad. They are busy with their own affairs and pleasures and have not yet heard your voice; get your message to them, and pray for their safety.
