Ghazal 238: With the crescent the world has drawn dye across the eyebrow of the festival

جهان بر ابروی عید از هلال وسمه کشید
هلال عید در ابروی یار باید دید

شکسته گشت چو پشت هلال قامت من
کمان ابروی یارم چو وسمه بازکشید

مگر نسیم خطت صبح در چمن بگذشت
که گل به بوی تو بر تن چو صبح جامه درید

نبود چنگ و رباب و نبید و عود، که بود
گل وجود من آغشتهٔ گلاب و نبید

بیا که با تو بگویم غم ملالت دل
چرا که بی تو ندارم مجال گفت و شنید

بهای وصل تو گر جان بود خریدارم
که جنس خوب مبصر به هر چه دید خرید

چو ماه روی تو در شام زلف می‌دیدم
شبم به روی تو روشن چو روز می‌گردید

به لب رسید مرا جان و برنیامد کام
به سر رسید امید و طلب به سر نرسید

ز شوق روی تو حافظ نوشت حرفی چند
بخوان ز نظمش و در گوش کن چو مروارید

With the crescent the world has drawn dye across the eyebrow of the festival;
the crescent of the festival should be seen in the eyebrow of the friend.

My stature was broken like the back of the crescent moon
when my friend drew out the bow of his eyebrow, like the line of dye.

Perhaps the breeze of your down passed through the meadow this morning,
for at your scent the rose tore the garment on its body, like the dawn.

There was no harp or rebec, no wine or lute, when
the clay of my being was already steeped in rose-water and wine.

Come, that I may tell you the grief of my weary heart,
for without you I have no power to speak or to listen.

If the price of union with you is life itself, I am a buyer,
for the one who knows good wares buys them at whatever price he sees.

When I saw the moon of your face in the evening of your tress,
my night was turning bright as day through your face.

My soul has reached my lips and my desire has not been fulfilled;
hope has come to its end, and the seeking has not come to an end.

Out of longing for your face Hafez has written a few words;
read from his verse, and wear it in your ear like a pearl.
