Ghazal 240
The cloud of early spring has risen, the wind of the New Year has blown;
I want the price of wine and a minstrel: who says "It has come"?
The beauties are on display and I am ashamed of my purse;
the burden of love with poverty is hard, and it has to be carried.
There is a famine of generosity; one must not sell one's honour.
Wine and roses must be bought with the price of the cloak.
It seems that something is about to open from my fortune, for last night
I was praying, and the true dawn was breaking.
With one lip and a hundred thousand laughs the rose came into the garden;
it seems she caught the scent of a generous man in some corner.
If a skirt is torn in the world of the rends, what does it matter?
A garment has to be torn in good repute as well.
These graces that I have spoken about your ruby lip, who has spoken them?
And this tyranny I have seen from the tip of your tress, who has seen it?
If the justice of the sultan does not ask after those wronged by love,
the recluses must give up their hope of ease.
I do not know who shot the lover-slaying arrow into Hafez's heart;
this much I know, that blood was dripping from his fresh verse.
It is a time for joy, but your means are short; bear this hardship with dignity and do not sell your honour to get what you want. There are signs of an opening, and your prayer was well timed. If a little of your good name is lost along the way, never mind. Your suffering has left its mark on your work and made it deeper.
