Ghazal 248
O east wind, bring me a fragrance from the street of a certain one;
I am wretched and sick with grief: bring me ease for my soul.
Touch the worthless coin of our heart with the elixir of desire;
that is, bring me a token of the dust from the friend's door.
In the ambush of the gaze I am at war with my own heart;
bring me an arrow and a bow from his eyebrow and his glance.
In exile and separation and grief of heart I have grown old;
bring me a cup of wine from the hand of a fresh young one.
Let those who deny it also taste two or three cups of this wine,
and if they will not take them, bring them quickly to me.
Cupbearer, do not put off today's pleasure until tomorrow,
or else bring me a letter of safe-conduct from the court of fate.
My heart slipped from my hand last night when Hafez was saying:
"O east wind, bring me a fragrance from the street of a certain one."
Far from a person or a place you love, you have grown tired and heartsick, and you need one small sign from them to revive you. Go and look for that news. Do not put off today's happiness until tomorrow, for no one holds a guarantee from fate. Pay no attention to the taunts of those who do not understand your state.
