Ghazal 249
East wind, bring a fragrance from the dust of the friend's road;
take the heart's sorrow away and bring glad news of the heart's keeper.
Tell a word that gives new life from the mouth of the friend;
bring a letter of good tidings from the world of secrets.
So that I may perfume my nostrils by the grace of your breeze,
bring a trace of the fragrance of the friend's breath.
By your faithfulness, bring the dust of that dear friend's road
without any of the dust that rises from strangers.
A little dust from the path of the friend, to spite the rival,
bring for the ease of this eye that rains blood.
Rawness and simple-heartedness are not the way of those who stake their lives;
bring some news from that roguish stealer of hearts.
In thanks that you live in pleasure, O bird of the meadow,
bring to the captives of the cage good news of the rose garden.
The soul's palate has turned bitter from the patience I kept without the friend;
bring one coaxing word from that sweet, sugar-raining lip.
It is long since the heart saw the face of what it seeks;
cupbearer, bring that goblet which works like a mirror.
What is Hafez's patched cloak worth? Stain it with wine,
and then bring him, drunk and ruined, from the head of the market.
You are waiting for good news from someone dear, and that news is on its way. Your patience in their absence has turned bitter, but soon you will receive a sign that calms your heart. And if you yourself are at ease, bring good news and encouragement to those who are in difficulty. Do not be naive: go forward with your eyes open.
