Ghazal 252
If life lasts, I will reach the tavern once again,
and I will do no other work than serving the rends.
Happy the day when I go with weeping eyes
to sprinkle water at the tavern door one more time.
There is no discernment among these people; for God's sake, some means
that I may take my jewel to another buyer.
If the friend has gone and did not acknowledge the claim of old companionship,
God forbid that I should go after another friend.
If the circle of the blue sphere turns in my favour,
I will bring him back into my hand with another turn of the compass.
My mind asks for a quiet life, if only they would allow it:
his playful glance, and then again that thieving tress.
See our sealed secret, how they have told it as a tale,
every moment, with tambourine and flute, at the head of another market.
Every moment I groan in pain, for every hour the sky
makes for my wounded heart with another torment.
I say it again: Hafez is not alone in this affair;
many another has been drowned in this desert.
You long to go back to a place or a state in which you were content; if life allows, you will. Your talent is not valued where you are, and perhaps you should take it somewhere else. But stay loyal to your old friend, even if they have not honoured the friendship. You are not alone in this suffering: many have travelled the same road.
