Ghazal 255

Lost Joseph will come back to Canaan; do not grieve.
The hut of sorrows will one day be a rose garden; do not grieve.

O grief-stricken heart, your state will mend; do not lose heart.
And this distracted head will come back to order; do not grieve.

If the spring of life remains, once more on the throne of the meadow
you will draw a canopy of roses over your head, O sweet-singing bird; do not grieve.

If the turning of the sphere did not go our way for a day or two,
the state of the times is not always the same; do not grieve.

Take care not to despair, since you are not aware of the secret of the unseen;
there are hidden games behind the veil; do not grieve.

O heart, if the flood of annihilation tears up the foundation of being,
since you have Noah for your helmsman, do not grieve at the storm.

If in longing for the Kaaba you set foot in the desert,
though the thorn of the acacia rebukes you, do not grieve.

Though the halting place is very dangerous and the goal very far,
there is no road that has no end; do not grieve.

Our state in separation from the beloved and under the rival's pressing,
God, who changes every state, knows it all; do not grieve.

Hafez, in the corner of poverty and the solitude of dark nights,
as long as your litany is prayer and the lesson of the Quran, do not grieve.

This is one of the most hopeful fals in Hafez: what, or whom, you have lost will return, and your house of sorrow will become a rose garden. Fortune does not stay in one state for ever, and behind the scenes things are in motion that you know nothing of. However long and dangerous the road, it has an end. Do not despair, do not give up prayer, and do not grieve.
