Ghazal 258: A thousand thanks that I have seen you again as I wished

هزار شکر که دیدم به کام خویشت باز
ز روی صدق و صفا گشته با دلم دمساز

روندگان طریقت ره بلا سپرند
رفیق عشق چه غم دارد از نشیب و فراز

غم حبیب نهان به ز گفت و گوی رقیب
که نیست سینهٔ ارباب کینه‌، محرم راز

اگر چه حسن تو از عشق غیر مستغنی‌ست
من آن نیم که از این عشق‌بازی آیم باز

چه گویمت که ز سوز درون چه می‌بینم
ز اشک پرس حکایت که من نیم غماز

چه فتنه بود که مشاطهٔ قضا انگیخت
که کرد نرگس مستش سیه به سرمهٔ ناز

بدین سپاس که مجلس منور است به دوست
گرت چو شمع جفایی رسد بسوز و بساز

غرض کرشمهٔ حسن است ور نه حاجت نیست
جمال دولت محمود را به زلف ایاز

غزل سرایی ناهید صرفه‌ای نبرد
در آن مقام که حافظ برآورد آواز

A thousand thanks that I have seen you again as I wished,
in sincerity and purity grown to be in tune with my heart.

The travellers of the Path tread the road of affliction;
what does the companion of love care for the rise and fall of the way?

Grief for the beloved kept hidden is better than talk with the rival,
for the breast of those who bear malice is no keeper of secrets.

Although your beauty has no need of anyone's love,
I am not one who will turn back from this game of love.

How shall I tell you what I see from the burning within?
Ask my tears for the story, for I am no tell-tale.

What mischief was it that the tirewoman of fate set in motion,
when she blackened his drunken narcissus with the kohl of coquetry?

In thanks that the gathering is lit by the friend,
if cruelty reaches you, as it does the candle, burn and bear it.

The point is the play of beauty; otherwise there is no need
for the beauty of Mahmud's fortune of the tress of Ayaz.

The ghazal-singing of Venus brings her no advantage
in the place where Hafez raises his voice.
