Ghazal 260

O cypress of the grace of beauty, who walk so sweetly in your pride,
lovers have a hundred needs every moment because of that pride.

Blessed be your fair countenance, for in pre-eternity
the robe of grace was cut to your cypress stature.

To the one who longs for the scent of the ambergris of your tress
say: "Like aloe wood, burn on the fire of passion and bear it."

The moth has the burning of its heart from the candle, but
without the candle of your cheek my heart is melting away.

The Sufi who without you had repented of wine, last night
broke his vow when he saw the tavern door open.

My assay is not altered by the taunts of the rival,
even if, like gold, they put me in the mouth of the shears.

The heart that came to its standing place by circling the Kaaba of your street,
out of longing for that sanctuary has no thought for the Hejaz.

What need of ablution with the blood of the eye at every moment, when
without the arch of your eyebrow my prayer is not permitted?

Like wine he has gone clapping his hands to the mouth of the jar again,
Hafez, who last night heard a secret from the lip of the cupbearer.

You are attached to someone who is well aware of their own beauty and pride and keeps you in a state of need. This road asks you to burn and to endure. Other people's taunts take nothing from your worth: you will come out of the test with honour. What you had set aside in their absence you will take up again, and a piece of good news will gladden your heart.
