Ghazal 263: Come, and launch our boat upon the river of wine
Come, and launch our boat upon the river of wine;
cast clamour and uproar into the souls of old and young.
Throw me into the boat of wine, O cupbearer,
for they have said: "Do a good deed and cast it upon the water."
By mistake I have turned back from the street of the tavern;
out of kindness set me once more on the right road.
Bring a cup of that rose-coloured, musk-scented wine;
cast the spark of jealousy and envy into the heart of the rose-water.
Although I am drunk and ruined, do me a kindness too:
cast a glance upon this bewildered, ruined heart.
If at midnight you have need of the sun,
cast the veil from the face of the rose-cheeked daughter of the vine.
Do not let them give me over to the earth on the day of my death;
take me to the tavern and cast me into the jar of wine.
When, like Hafez, your heart has had all it can bear of the sky's tyranny,
cast the dart of a shooting star at the demon of affliction.
Interpretation of the fal
It is time to take the plunge and bring some life and joy to yourself and to others. Do good without expecting any reward. If you have turned away from the road your heart was set on, go back to it. In the face of fortune's injustice and of sorrow, do not sit idle: drive them off with resolve.
