Ghazal 265
My desire, in longing for your lip, has not yet been fulfilled;
in hope of the cup of your ruby I am still drinking the dregs.
On the first day my faith was lost for the sake of your two tresses;
what will be the end of me in this passion is still to be seen.
Cupbearer, one draught of that fire-coloured water, for I
am still raw among those whom his love has ripened.
By mistake I once called your tress the musk of Khotan;
every hair on my body still strikes at me, each moment, with a blade.
Ever since the sun saw the ray of your face in my retreat,
it still comes every moment, like a shadow, to my door and roof.
One day my name passed the lips of the beloved by a slip;
to people of heart the scent of the soul still comes from my name.
In pre-eternity the cupbearer of your ruby lip gave us
a draught from a cup, and I am still senseless from that cup.
O you who said: "Give up your life, so that your soul may have rest",
I gave my life over to grief for him, and still I have no rest.
Hafez brought the story of his ruby lip to the pen;
the water of life is still flowing, every moment, from my pens.
You have not yet reached what you want, and you are getting by on the smallest share. This attachment has been with you from the first day, and its end is not yet in sight. Do not think of yourself as finished and mature: there is still a road ahead. Even so, this very passion gives life to your work and your words. Stay patient.
