Ghazal 269
O heart, your own well-wishing fortune is companion enough for the journey;
the breeze from the garden of Shiraz is messenger enough for your road.
Do not travel again from the dwelling of the beloved, dervish,
for the journey of the spirit and the corner of the lodge are enough for you.
And if some grief springs an ambush from a corner of the heart,
the sanctuary of the Magian elder's court is refuge enough for you.
Sit at the head of the tavern bench and drink your cup of wine,
for this much gain of wealth and rank from the world is enough for you.
Do not ask for more; make things easy for yourself.
A flask of ruby wine and a beauty like the moon are enough for you.
The sky gives the reins of desire to ignorant people;
you are a person of merit and learning: that sin is enough for you.
Longing for the familiar home and the covenant of the old friend
is excuse enough for you before those who have travelled the road.
Do not get used to being obliged to others, for in both worlds
the approval of God and the bounty of your king are enough for you.
There is no need of any other litany, O Hafez;
the prayer of midnight and the lesson of morning are enough for you.
If you are thinking of a journey or a move, this fal points towards staying: what you want is right here, near home and near your old friend. Do not ask for too much, and make things easy for yourself. If with all your knowledge and skill you have not succeeded, know that fortune often suits the ignorant better. Do not put yourself in anyone's debt: your own prayer and effort are enough.
