Ghazal 273

اگر رفیق شفیقی، درست پیمان باش
حریف خانه و گرمابه و گلستان باش

شکنج زلف پریشان به دست باد مده
مگو که خاطر عشاق، گو پریشان باش

گرت هواست که با خضر هم‌نشین باشی
نهان ز چشم سکندر چو آب حیوان باش

زبور عشق نوازی نه کار هر مرغی است
بیا و نوگل این بلبل غزل‌خوان باش

طریق خدمت و آیین بندگی کردن
خدای را که رها کن به ما و سلطان باش

دگر به صید حرم تیغ برمکش، زنهار
وز آن که با دل ما کرده‌ای پشیمان باش

تو شمع انجمنی، یک‌زبان و یک‌دل شو
خیال و کوشش پروانه بین و خندان باش

کمال دل‌بری و حسن در نظربازی است
به شیوهٔ نظر، از نادران دوران باش

خموش حافظ و از جور یار ناله مکن
تو را که گفت که در روی خوب، حیران باش؟

If you are a kindly comrade, be true to your pledge;
be the companion of house and bath and rose garden.

Do not give the curls of your scattered tress into the hand of the wind;
do not say: "Let the minds of the lovers be scattered."

If you wish to keep company with Khizr,
be hidden from the eye of Alexander, like the water of life.

To play the psalms of love is not the work of every bird;
come, and be the fresh rose of this ghazal-singing nightingale.

The way of service and the custom of being a servant,
for God's sake leave those to us, and you be the sultan.

Do not draw the sword again on the game of the sanctuary, take care,
and be sorry for what you have done to our heart.

You are the candle of the gathering: be of one tongue and one heart;
see the fancy and the striving of the moth, and smile.

The perfection of beauty and of winning hearts lies in the play of glances;
in the art of the glance be one of the rarities of the age.

Be silent, Hafez, and do not lament the friend's tyranny;
who told you to be dazzled by a fair face?
