Ghazal 276
If the gardener wants the company of the rose for five days,
he needs the nightingale's patience with the cruelty of the thorn of separation.
O heart, in the bond of his tress do not lament your distraction;
the shrewd bird, once it has fallen into the snare, needs to endure.
What has the rend who sets the world on fire to do with prudence?
It is the business of the kingdom that needs planning and reflection.
On the Path, to lean on piety and learning is unbelief;
the wayfarer, though he have a hundred skills, needs trust in God.
With such a tress and such a face, may the play of glances be forbidden
to anyone who still needs the face of the jasmine and the curl of the hyacinth.
The airs of that drunken narcissus of his have to be borne,
as long as this distracted heart needs that curl and that forelock.
Cupbearer, how long will you delay the passing of the cup?
When the round comes to the lovers, it needs to be unbroken.
Who is Hafez, that he should not drink wine without the sound of the lute?
Why should a poor lover need so much luxury?
Every brief joy demands a great deal of patience. Now that you are caught, restlessness is no use: endure. Do not rely on your own knowledge and virtue, but trust in God. If you want someone, you must also put up with their moods. Do not be slack or slow in what you are doing, and be content with the little you have.
